The importance of resilience
We are typically described as resilient if we successfully negotiate a difficult situation or event. This is often achieved by regaining and or maintaining an even keel despite the challenge.
Resilience may be an inherited trait, but we more commonly see it as a process of decision making that can be trained and mastered. In fact, a resilient outcome may also involve growth, becoming a template or map we can use to bounce back from future adversity.
Resilient people have self-efficacy (I can do this), support networks (they can help me) and an optimistic outlook - often of the challenge itself (this was a good lesson)!
Although resilience is a popular description we have only recently begun to research its positive role in human development, performance and well-being.
Philippa Skowno's consultancy applies and adds to the current body of knowledge of resilience-building strategies and interventions in a variety of human sectors.
